Earlier this evening I received a firmware that updated the phone to Android 4.1.2. This update added two significant features: Multi Window and customizable Notification Panel buttons (scroll to bottom of post to see screenshots.
This post needs no introduction as many Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone owners all over the world await the official roll out of Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. I decided I didn’t want to play the waiting game so I went ahead and installed a JB firmware ahead of the official update. Those of you itching to know what Jelly Bean on the S3 looks like, here are the vital screen shots to pique your interest.

Android Jelly Bean upgrade adds more items to the Galaxy S3 Settings menu making it really long.

SHIMWORLD 
It kind of convenient they make the quick setting bar 2 rows, instead of scrolling left/right. Anyway, the 2 rows may reduce the viewing area for notification. Pro/con. Hopefully it settable instead of fix.

It’s quite rare for me to receive notifications that fill up what’s left of the screen’s real estate. The settings buttons are rather large and can be reduced slightly to fit one or two more function short cuts. I think it would be quite useful if Samsung designed the buttons that can be rearranged so we could arrange the frequently used ones to appear on one screen.

Quite agree on that. I think that the limitation of Android, as it only allow hardcode UI.

I have the jb update and my quick settings bar is still single line you have to scroll through.

what happend to the Driving mode ? how can I turn it on ?

This is annoying. Driving Mode got buried in Settings > Language and input > Text-to-speech output and unfortunately there’s no Apps or Widgets short cut to drag onto the Home screen.

I agree – why has driving mode got buried. I have to press a lot of buttons now to turn it on and off – pretty dangerous when driving

No shortcut for driving mode and no method to create one is very annoying. One of the most used switchws for me. Asier to use S voice to turn it on and off rather than so many menus.

I don’t on the other hand want Blocking mode. Hopefully hidden somewhere, all this will be configurable to my (and other individual’s) own preference or is this wishful thinking?

Mobile operating systems are pretty much what you see is what you get ie not customizable. Had Driving Mode been an App you might be able to place it on the lock screen for your convenience.

I agree with lab, it’s quite the pain in the ass to go through alll those menus. I’m not sure i’m happy with new update.. liked my galaxy s3 better when it didnt have jellybean

I like the new Jelly Bean 4.1.1. Everything runs awesome, except I cant do screenshots anymore. Does anyone know if they just changed how you do them or if your just not able to anymore. Thats one reason why I got my loved Galaxy s3

The ability to capture screen hasn’t changed with Jelly Bean. Check that the menu is enabled
Settings > System > Motion > Hand Motions > Palm swipe to capture [checked]
On the contrary, I have mine turned off because it would accidentally take screenshots while the phone is in my jeans back pocket. I prefer to use the + toggle.

How do I add back mobile data to notification bar? It disappeared before Jellybean was updated.

Hi Justin, those short cuts are hard coded into the operating system and aren’t optional extras. If they aren’t showing on yours I think you may need to do a clean install of JB.

The Verizon version seems to have lost the email widget. I used to be able to put an email widget on the homescreen for each email account (non-gmail). Any ideas?

A simple change like removing the mobile data icon from the notifications bar creates an irritating reaction. It now requires extra steps to handle what was a simple task. Why do these developers do this?

I like the idea of blocking mode but replacing the Notifications switch for the Blocking Mode one frustrate me. My standard night time mode was to turn off notifications only. Oh well.

Now this blocking function made it, only better (allow you to set exceptions). I understand there are some apps there to do something similar but coming from BB I would have expected this is a built-in feature.

Hi Jan,
I recently upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S3 I747 to Android 4.1.1 and the icon for Mobile Data has gone missing from the Notification Panel !! To add to the agony, I don’t even have the above option of customising the ‘Notification Panel’ in the ‘Display’ settings.
Any solutions or work around to get the Mobile Data icon in the Notification Panel?
