WHY GUESS WHEN YOU CAN GET IT RIGHT WITH THE HOODMAN HOODLOUPE 3.0

Hands up those of you who have taken photographs outdoor during the day and have difficulty reviewing images on the camera LCD. I thought so. We have all done that one time or another and if you’re shooting professionally I think you want to take the guesswork out of each click especially when the assignment involves shooting in bright sunlight. It’s one thing to generally avoid shooting in such high contrast condition and it’s quite another when you struggle to see what you’ve just shot. The HoodLoupe is a product that has been around for a while and currently offers the HoodLoupe 3.0 where 3 simply means it’s designed for 3-inch LCD (an optional HoodRiser Attachment is available to make it fit 4 inch LCD screens).

HoodLoupe has a +/- 3 diopter adjustment setting to accommodate users with less than perfect vision. Each HoodLoupe is rubber coated for comfort and protection, comes with detachable lanyard and storage case.

Precise German optics give 1 to 1 ratio for true LCD screen viewing.
Hoodman-01
A real world representation of what the back of the camera LCD looks like in bright sunlight. Under such harsh light, it's impossible to critically assess the image. Placing your hand on the top of the LCD to block the sun only makes matters worse by creating a dark shadow compounding the problem.

Using the PowerShot G11, I took a photo of the same image (of my neighbour's house) when viewered using the HoodLoupe 3.0 — a remarkable difference between guessing it and getting it.

  1. Nifty gizmo. I depend more on the histogram these days plus a lot of common sense (read experience). Glad you find the hoodman useful and indispensable.

    1. While I have in the the past largely depended on the barely legible histogram and drawing on experience to get things right in such conditions, I prefer not to any more especially when a practical and affordable solution exists.

  2. Kathryn Brenner – I avoided this for a long time thinking it was kind of hokey and a little expensive for a piece of rubber. But after watching +Dave Brenner being frustrated by not being able to see the LCD, I bought one for him for a holiday gift. It helped him so much that I soon bought one for myself! The Hoodman HoodLoupe is a definite MUST in every camera bag!
