THE YUMMIEST FRIED KWAY TEOW AT NAM WAH RESTAURANT

Saturday mornings are sacred. I try not to schedule or accept assignments on weekends so I get to spend the morning dropping off Jamie and Jewel at school before our weekly shopping at the Seria tamu fresh market. On rare occasions when work beckons rather unavoidably, I get pretty upset about missing the one day of the week I get to do things together with my wife not forgetting to mention also, missing my weekly workout with my badminton buddies.

There are basically only 3 places where we have our breakfast on Saturdays: Nam Wah, Soi Heng for their Sambal Fried Kway Teow or the old wet market where I have heavenly Teochew fried noodles. On Sundays, breakfast with the kids include Universal Cafe (also in Seria) for their one-of-a-kind signature Cheezy French Toast.

My favourite Nam Wah's Fried Kway Teow with Beef and the right amount of sauce.
It was a theme morning for us as she ordered the equally tempting Kolo Kway Teow instead.

  1. The 2nd dish looked more like prepared for the camera. But equally tempting. Luscious, mouth-watering Nam Wah KT.

    1. The best thing about looking at these pictures at night is not the temptation to have one (you can’t because these restaurants aren’t 24 x 7) but the motivation to get out of bed in the morning and actually have something good to look forward to before the daily grind takes over!

  2. I miss that Kway Teow so much. The last time we had authentic Kway Teow was in the 70’s in Malaysia. No one can make it properly in Vancouver, BC. It’s just not the same in Canada. Your pictures look awesome.

  3. Dear Jan, your urgent help is required! I have flown in from Europe and will be visiting Kuala Belait and Seria tomorrow for a few hours only. I am desperately seeking the dry fried char kway teow of my childhood which we used to buy from the hawker stalls in the market in Seria (in the early 1970s). Wrapped in plastic and newspaper in the old days, and simply delicious!! Do you know where I can find it? I will be there from approx noon till 4pm. I can even call you if you email me your number! I am driving in from Miri on a day trip. I just discovered your posts online about kway teow and realized you are the expert:))
    Many thx in advance, Helene

    1. Hello Helene,

Welcome back to oil town Seria! The iconic Seria hawker stalls have since moved across the road from where it used to be. The oil town is so small that I’m sure you could stop someone in the streets and asked them for directions to the nearest fried kway teow. There are so many eateries that sell dry fried char kway teow namely: Soi Heng (next to Roomz Hotel), Zuki Cafe (downstairs of Seria Hotel), Nam Wah (opposite Metro parking / SHELL gas station), Tai Hua (one of the Chinese restaurants in the same row as the ever so popular Universal Cafe.

I just saw your comment and it’s almost 4 pm. I hope you at least stumbled into one of these eateries and relived a moment. I’m no food expert and this post is just a reflection of my favourite wet fried kway teow that I have once a week following open market shopping.
