After a really long hiatus from photographing hornbills, I’ve broken the “drought” with new set of Oriental Pied hornbill images. Long story but if you prefer not to read about it, too bad, I’m going to share it anyway. The original idea was to add The World’s Lowest Hill location on FourSquare but I stopped way short of that and was justifiably distracted by a score of hornbills that were tree-hopping on the Panaga golf course. It was the largest gathering of hornbills I had ever come across in a single location (I lost count after number 15). For more pictures of hornbills, feel free to use the search tool.
“World’s Lowest Hill” entry on FourSquare has to wait another day.

Beautifully taken Jan!!! Very beautiful indeed! If I’m not mistaken, these are the Anthracoceros. =D haha. I never get to see them around here in Bandar.. haha…
Yes, the more reason we need to make sure they continue to enjoy their stay here. It’s bad enough that I’ve lost the one tree where hornbills regularly stop over, it would be devastating to have the entire hornbill colony disappear some day. I guess my fear of the inevitable is what motivates me to take more pictures of them.
The Panaga area and the forested area near to your home, are fast dwindling. Soon, we’ll see fewer of these birds. It’s great you have skilfully captured these birds. The effort by PNHS (Panaga Natural History Society) putting up roosting and nesting boxes is highly lauded but it is not sufficient because of encroachment of human activities and decimation of habitats for these birds. Nonetheless, I enjoy these photos as I enjoy those on your earlier post, Hornbills of Brunei.
I nowadays continue on supporting the hornbills of Panaga as part of PNHS; and I can tell you that the two in the upper picture are both males! Its years ago, still nice to tell you! Great pictures.
