SPARE A THOUGHT ON AIDILFITRI

Hats off to these brave men! It takes a lot of guts to leave your country and loved ones behind to work overseas. In quite the stark contrast to well paid globetrotting working professionals many who travel abroad to seek employment are domestic helpers and construction workers. Today as the country celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri or the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr, spare a thought for these workers who labour away unrelenting heat day to build our nation and our homes.

On this day of Islamic new year and a day of rest, Muslims congregate at a local mosque to attend the Eid prayer in the morning. Pictured above is a muslim worker dressed in traditional clothes and a songkok returning to his worksite accommodation from the morning prayer to join his colleagues.

Workers commuting on bicycles and motorcycles are a common sight in my neighbourhood in oil town Seria, reminiscent of my recent experience in the streets of Hanoi but isn’t nearly as intense. During the day you can catch them in their coveralls so it’s rare so it’s unusual to see them in customary attire except during their Friday prayers.

Wikipedia has more information on the Islamic tradition and events leading up to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

SELAMAT HARI RAYA TO ALL MY MUSLIM READERS!

  1. Copying someone else’s work and posting it in another site without prior permission is not only UNCOOL but downright WRONG! I can accept a resize of the image (since different blogs have different max width) but resizing and rehosting it elsewhere is insulting.

For images where ownership is clearly established, please have the decency to at least include a Copyright © owner underneath. It’s a very simple gesture for being respectful.

The right approach to using another person’s image(s) is to link back to the source. In this case the source is

    Thanks.
