Behind The Scenes: Photographing Fish & Co. Menu in Brunei

By now, you’ll have noticed how much I use the Photogenic 60-inch umbrellas for practically every commercial photo assignment where soft diffused lighting is desired. They are also storage friendly and unpack easily so setting up time is kept to a minimum. Rather than labour on about the shoot, I’ll let you enjoy the pictures instead. Thank you and congratulations RBC for bringing the long overdue Fish & Co to Brunei.

I shot this with my ever so useful Canon Powershot G11 just before I sat down to savour this large king prawn (flown in from Singapore) baked with generous helping of roe (not visible in pic) and mozzarella cheese.

What Is In My Camera Bag When Shooting Commercial Assignments

While holidaying in Hong Kong in 2007, I met up with Roland and along the way discovered that he had an unused LowePro Rolling CompuTrekker Plus AW for sale. Perfect as I happened to be looking for a rolling bag for work. Leaving Hong Kong empty handed was now an impossibility not to mention also there was a sale at the time so I was able to stuff the otherwise empty bag with clothing. Since then, both Roland and I continued publishing our work on WordPress and we’re both authors of a million hits photo blog. This LowePro bag has since been the single most indispensable bag for all my commercial photography assignments within Brunei. While its dimensions are within airline carry-on specification, its laden weight is too heavy to fit in an overhead compartment.

Working solo, I drag the LowePro CompuTrekker bag and custom light stand pouch that weigh a total 26 kilos from location to location bearing in mind the time required to re-pack each time. If budding photographers think this is “so cool” I can honestly say feeling dead tired at the end of a day’s shoot is anything but cool. Try it sometime and we can talk about it over coffee someday — now that’s a cool idea! :)

The LowePro Rolling CompuTrekker Plus AW is spacious and accommodates all my equipment including a 17-inch Dell Studio laptop on the cover. It is also very heavy and weighs 16 kilos (excluding the laptop).

The LowePro bag holds: 2 Canon 5D Mark II bodies, 2 Phottix Odin Transmitters, 3 Phottix Odin Receivers, 2 Canon Speedlite 580EX Flashes, 1 Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash, EF 17-40mm lens, EF 24-70mm, 70-200mm f/2.8mm IS, EF 100mm Macro f/2.8 IS, EF 8-15mm Fisheye, Powerex 2700mAh Rechargeable Batteries, 2 Canon CPE3/4 Power Packs, Gaffer Tape, Velcros, Honl Gels, Honl Grid and a Hoodman 3.0 LCD Loupe. The laminated mesh pockets (not shown) hold smaller items such as 16GB and 8GB SanDisk Extreme Compact Flash cards. [ Laden weight excluding 17" laptop: 16 Kilos ]

A bag I designed that's tailored to accommdate my needs: 2 aluminium light stands, 1 aluminium telescopic boom, 1 heavy duty tripod with extra room to take up to 2 telephoto lenses in a pouch.

The other bag is a custom made foam padded and lined pouch to accommodate: 2 air cushioned aluminium light stands (fully extends to 8 feet), 2 60-inch and 2 32-inch Photogenic Umbrellas, 1 Slik Heavy Duty tripod and has enough room to accommodate extra camera lenses such as EF 70-200mm stored in a padded LowePro lens pouch if needed. [ Laden weight: 10 Kilos ]
